History of the Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair

Celebrating over six decades of innovation, curiosity, and student achievement.

Our History

The Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair began in 1960 at Moira Secondary School, led by science teacher Glenn Shaver, who inspired local educators to create a regional fair that would encourage scientific curiosity and public presentation of student research.

In 1961, the Rotary Club of Belleville became the official sponsor, supporting prizes, logistics, and travel for students advancing to provincial and national fairs. The fair grew rapidly, with dozens of entries from schools across the region.

By 1962, QRSTF was sending students to the Canada‑Wide Science Fair — a tradition that continues today.

Over the decades, QRSTF has been hosted at Moira Secondary School, Belleville Collegiate Institute, the Belleville Armouries, Loyalist College, Centennial Secondary School, and St. Theresa Catholic Secondary School.

Today, QRSTF supports more than 70 schools, 70+ student projects, 80+ volunteer judges, and over 25 special awards — continuing its mission to inspire innovation, curiosity, and scientific inquiry across the Quinte Region.
